Appearance and Attitude:

Short hair, bushy walrus mustache, fair skin.  Stocky, but not fat - not the fastest crewman, but high endurance and tolerance of pain and temperature extremes compensate.

Always soft-spoken, but do not mistake him as being devoid of emotion - he tends to sublimate his emotions.  Does not beat around the bush - if something is, it is - full stop.   Will not talk down to anyone, even the lowest ranking crewperson - in his job, every observation provided him may be important.

Prefers to wait until data is perfected before drawing conclusions, but is able to act on incomplete data.  Always tries to have several alternatives in mind for future courses of action.  Tends towards diplomacy - preventing a situation from getting to the point where a shields/phasers decision need be made, when possible, is part of his job description.

Bio:

Born on Svalbard (the Norwegian arctic island) in 2348, a descendant of WWII Norwegian resistance leader and Kon-Tiki radioman Torstein Raaby, Lars observed the physics of Arctic conditions from the time he was six (he provided meteorological data to the Norwegian coast guard from his own homebuilt kit).   When he was twelve, his parents moved to northern Canada on a scientific mission, where he continued his amateur meteorological observations whilst completing secondary school with high honours.

When he completed secondary school at the age of sixteen, he began his university studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, while competing in cross-country and track & field, medalling at the national championships in each discipline twice in his career.  His graduate studies took him to Organia, where he met Klingon and Romulan science students at the Organian Science Festival there.  In 2374, he received his doctorates in physics and chemistry from the University of Wisconsin (involving his research in the use of bio-enhanced electronic relays to extend the maximum safe range of transporter beams).  He then returned to Organia, where he participated in a joint venture science mission, of four years' duration, exploring the Neutral Zone, with a mixed staff of Klingons, Romulans, Organian, and Federation personnel.

Returning in 2378, he is applying to Starfleet Academy, with the intention to become a science officer, thanks to advice from his friend in Obsidian Fleet, USS Raider's Captain Tony Ljaskic.

Notes:

Lars Raaby has been granted a commission by the Starfleet Academy through it's program of Previous Experience asssesment.
